Indian Lowfat Cooking: The Key to a Healthy and Exotic Diet Review

We love Indian food but I had never cooked it before. We needed to change our way of eating after some family health scares. Low fat is no fun if it's also low flavor. Roshi Razzaq's beautiful book and clear recipes introduced me to a whole new way of cooking and eating - low fat but incredibly delicious. She has even given me the confidence to try my own combinations. Indian food has gone from a special treat to the mainstay of our diet. Thank you, Roshi!

Chef Paul Prudhomme's Fork in the Road Review

Chef Paul Prudhomme's Fork in the Road
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife was sent to the nutritionist recently by her doctor, and this nice lady asks her, "So what did you eat last night?" My wife says, "Well, baked acorn squash with apples, shrimp, leafy greens, lots of spices, a little bread crumbs, and a pinch of Parmesan on top." The nutritionist's jaw drops. "How much fat?" "Oh, well, just the cheese, really." The nutritionist now asks if it was tasty? "Oh yes, excellent. It's a Paul Prudhomme recipe, you see." The nutritionist now begs for a copy of this recipe. I should note that I had eaten this dish (and I hate squash) and thought it was delightfully full of fat. Oops!
Okay, not every recipe in here is spectacular. But most of them are incredible. Your pantry will fill with things like apple juice, evaporated skim milk, and the like, but you will eat very well and not look like Paul Prudhomme (I'm sure he'd think this funny, and you know what he looks like).
The baked squash with shrimp is worth the price of admission right there, because you'd think it was seriously bad for you. You can taste the butter, you see, and the cheese. Of course, there isn't any, and it's amazingly healthy. If you ate this every day, you'd probably lose weight, but people would be begging to come eat with you. The guy's a genius.
Let's face it, if you mastered all these recipes you could open a health-food restaurant and make a mint. Serve up a lot of hard-core fattening food that just happens to have no fat at all. And they'd line up.
A couple hints.
You really do need a bunch of non-stick pans. The insane heat with no fat thing doesn't work so well without non-stick. Get the best quality you can. For an extra-special treat, put a tablespoon of olive oil in the bottom instead. That's the kind of non-fat we're talking about: a tablespoon of olive oil is a big jump.
If you're making the browned flour to produce fat-free roux, go very slow and don't expect really dark colors. It works, but it's definitely a halfway measure.
Magic Brightening is surprisingly effective. Don't knock it until you try it.
Remember that this is way pre-Atkins, so it's low fat but not low-carb. If you're a carb [...], go eat a steak and shut up. If you're into delicious food with very low fat, buy this book.
About 50% of the recipes here are brilliant, absolute genius. About 25% are very good indeed. The rest are a mixed bag, but I must mention that I don't have a dehydrator so the whole "turkey jerky" thing just passed me by.
So what you do is you buy this and you buy "Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen" and you alternate. You have "Fork in the Road" health food for two days, which is no hardship, then you have something totally evil and decadent from "Louisiana Kitchen" for a night, and then, feeling guilty but full, you start again on the "Fork in the Road" health food.
There are other Cajun cookbooks, of course, but what for? Eat 'em and weep.

The Best Life Diet Cookbook: More than 175 Delicious, Convenient, Family-Friendly Recipes Review

The Best Life Diet Cookbook: More than 175 Delicious, Convenient, Family-Friendly Recipes
Average Reviews:

Best-life advocate Bob Greene positions the ideas in this cookbook as a "gift that you give to yourself and your loved ones." Home-cooked meals made from fresh, natural ingredients will make you feel better, live longer and bond with your family and friends. Makes sense to me. And if you just want to cook yummy foods, these dishes are delicious.
They are also nutritious, and all the details for each serving are at the end of each recipe: calories, protein, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, sugar, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, calcium and sodium.
Easy-to-follow meal plans are broken down into three sections. Quick and Easy meals take no more than 20 minutes to prepare, Kitchen Connoisseur choices are a little more adventurous, and Family-Friendly meals offer healthy versions of family favorites. Each meal plan has six calorie levels: 1,500, 1,600, 1,700, 1,800, 2,000 and 2,500 calories a day.
Although most of the recipes are geared to busy families with little time to spend in the kitchen, there is a whole chapter of wonderful, healthy dishes from accomplished chefs. These recipes may take a little longer than the 30 minutes or so the other recipes require to prepare. Some of the chefs participating include Mollie Ahlstrand of Trattoria Mollie, Dan Barber of Blue Hill, Sarma Melngailis of Pure Food and Wine, Charlie Trotter of Charlie Trotter's and Roy Yamaguchi of the 35 Roy's Restaurants around the world. Ahlstrand's Zuppa di Pomodoro is a flavorful take on tomato soup that uses garlic, brandy, rosemary and orange juice.
In the back is a handy Techniques tutorial showing how to roast garlic, toast nuts, section citrus, clarify butter and the like.
Other good choices for healthy cookbooks include Deceptively Delicious, Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World and The Most Decadent Diet Ever.
The Eat This Not That! series is also excellent.
Here's the chapter list:
1. Introduction
2. Recipes
3. Breakfast
4. Soups
5. Salads
6. Sandwiches, Wraps and Crispbreads
7. Entrees: Meat, Poultry, Seafood, Vegetarian
8. Side Dishes: Grains, Vegetables

The Fat Flush Cookbook Review

The Fat Flush Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started the Fat Flush Diet Plan less than 30 days ago and am happy to report a weight loss of 27lbs. in that short time frame! This cookbook is essential if you wish to follow the Fat Flush Plan! This diet is not totally easy if you really value the addition of salt or butter, but really effective! Flax oil is a primary ingredient and I believe it does promote weight loss in addition to many other health benefits, but it is not at all tasty, in my opinion. Try the mock mashed potatoes, using a cauliflower puree and several of the breakfast suggestions (eggs are vital to success), plus the smoothie recipes and you will lose weight and (most importantly, inches) in a short period of time! This book contains many delicious and health smart recipes, using ingredients you may previously have discounted, and the diet plan works. After a month on the plan, I craved salt on my entrees more than anything else, but I did lose a great deal of weight and inches and truly recommend the diet plan and cookbook to anyone committed to real weight loss and helpful insights to healthy eating.

Weight Watchers In 20 Minutes Review

Weight Watchers In 20 Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Healthy flavorful recipes made from ingredients you probably already have, or will be easily found in the local grocery store. Most recipes come with a Time-Saver tip or a suggestion for a side dish.
Each recipe ends with a breakdown of per serving: calories, fat, sat fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, fiber, protein, and of course, points.
A lot of the recipes are for suitable for lunches or dinners. There are very few for breakfast, soups, salads, or desserts. (This actually suits me just fine.)
The spiral bound spine allows the book to lie flat on the counter. Sturdy hard cover. Appetizing pictures.
So why only 4 stars? For some odd reason, the ingredient lists are printed in a light grey color. The instructions are normal black color. I find my tired old eyes squinting to read the ingredients. Annoying.
Not annoying enough to dampen my enthusiasm or lessen my recommendation for my newest favorite cookbook!

The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy: Wheat-Free and Gluten-Free with Less Fuss and Less Fat Review

The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy: Wheat-Free and Gluten-Free with Less Fuss and Less Fat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read all the reviews before I bought this book and assumed it was a good book for people allergic to gluten looking for 'healthy' recipes. If you consider brown sugar, confectioner's sugar, white sugar, corn syrup, margarine, Butter Flavored Crisco, canned vegetables, and soda 'healthy' ingredients then by all means this book is for you. But, if you're like me and have health problems then I would suggest not buying this book. You'd be better off buying prepared gluten free flour and adapting recipes you already have.
Many of the meat and vegetable recipes are just wasting space in the book. How hard is it to prepare poached salmon, three bean salad, or cole slaw without gluten?
I am returning the book to Amazon because I cannot use it.

Fat Free, Flavor Full: Dr. Gabe Mirkin's Guide to Losing Weight and Living Longer

I lost 30 pounds in 6 months on this diet and kept it off. The reason this book succeeded for me where all other diets failed is that it supplied me with lots of recipes for food that I could stuff myself silly with. There is no limiting portions or stopping at one serving (with the high fiber, low fat recipes). I can make a whole pot of stew and eat the whole thing at one sitting if I want. It works for me because I find the recipes absolutely delicious. This book won't help people who dislike grains, beans or the exotic flavors it uses. But if you like this type of food, this is THE weight loss book to use!

Asian Fusion Review

Asian Fusion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a big fan of Asian cuisine. The flavors are so unique, as are many of the vegetables and pastas that are included in the dishes. Traditional Asian meals do not normally contain a lot of dairy so that ingredient is not particularly missed in these vegan recipes. Meat, too, can be take it or leave it in many Asian dishes and I did not miss it's presence in this cookbook. If you are trying to include more vegan dishes in your diet, eating Asian foods is one way to do that without even noticing it!
If you have never cooked Asian foods at home, this book will be a very handy reference guide. The first 20 pages is nothing but the ingredients and their definitions! This is a very helpful section when you are trying to shop for ingredients...should you look for Chana dal with the vegetables or the spices? (it is a pea, usually sold dried by the way!)
The recipes are divided by region, which makes it a little hard to flip through to find a recipe but the index in the back simplifies it since you can look up 'eggplant' and find all appropriate dishes. Each recipe is given an English name as well as it's traditional name and there are a few sentences about each one describing its' history, taste, technique, etc. I was a little intimidated by the number of ingredients in some of the recipes but this is not unusual for Asian cuisine. So many flavors, spices, vegetables, etc are added to some dishes to achieve just the right flavor. The recipes aren't necessarily complicated or time consuming but these are not 5 ingredient dishes. The author does a wonderful job of describing the preparation steps of each recipe so even if you are a novice in the kitchen, you will not have too much trouble with the preparation of these dishes. I think this book includes a wonderful selection of recipes from a number of different regions of Asia.

Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites: Flavorful Recipes for Healthful Meals Review

Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites: Flavorful Recipes for Healthful Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have several Moosewood cookbooks, but have sometimes found that the recipes can be complicated and time-consuming, and can involve ingredients that are not always easy to find. This book, however, contains good recipes that are not only healthy, but also relatively easy and quick to make. From soups to salads to entrees, I haven't tried anything that I haven't liked, and I really appreciate the effort that was made to make the dishes low fat. Low fat or not, the recipes included here are for food that is both flavorful and hearty. A must-try for the vegetarian or even the meat eater who wants to try to include some vegetarian meals in his/her diet. I find myself turning to this book when I want to make a meal for friends who are not necessarily vegetarian, and they are always pleasantly surprised and ask for the recipe! These meals would encourage even the hard core carnivores to take a break and eat some veggies!

This is one of the best vegetarian cookbook ever. Most of the recipes are simple and fast to make, and all of them delicious.
It classified every meal into vegan, lacto-ovo, lacto, and ovo; and each recipe has the nutrionational guide too.
In the last edition they added the Smart Carbs chapter, for vegeterians that are also interested in wiselly choosing their carbohydrates.
I totally recommend this book for everyone that want to eat in a healthier way.
